A translucent, flexible fiber known as fiber optic is created by pulling glass or plastic to a diameter that is marginally thicker than human hair. Fiber optic cables are widely used in fiber optic communications, where they allow transmission over greater distances and at higher bandwidth (data rates) than electrical cables. They are primarily used to transport light between the two ends of the fiber.
